I like the Subaru BRZ and the other Toyobarus, they're very good at handling due to their superior chassis compared to other sports cars like the entry-level Camaro and Mustang models, the Audi TT, BMW Z4, Mazda Miata, and even Lotus Elise.

The problem is that Subaru and Toyota have wasted too much money on outdated cash cow jokester cars like the crap handling 5.0-liter Lexus F models (which get severely punked by turbocharged German market competitors) and the boy racer GR hatchbacks (which also are HORRIBLY FASTER than the weak BRZ). They could have developed an STI version based on the BRZ with the WRX sedan's powerplant while retaining the RWD system, but instead they went the whole other, useless route.

My advice to Toyota (AND ESPECIALLY NISSAN) would be to save this "rivalry" s**t for the Americans and Germans. The Japanese should focus on producing better handling cars. Look at Honda for example, they have the Civic Si and Type R, both great budget-friendly hatches that will trap you nowhere on a highway. The Acura TLX Type S will kick asses of the Lexus and Infiniti V6TT and V8 sedans on twisty tracks because of its superior package (tires, wheels, brakes, suspension, even appearance is important).

And then there's that boring AWD GR Corolla, which is a bit more of a premium performance hatch than a driver's car. Closer to a grand tourer than a sports car, to be real honest...

The Japanese made very decent straight-line cars during the '80s, '90s, '00s... many of them were credible track cars too. And then the Subaru WRX STI when it first came out went from killing muscle cars to barely being on par with I4T and V6 "muscle cars"...

its sad, that this car has not as much power, as it deserves. its made for more

I had a go in this car recently, and I was very unimpressed. It's sold as a 4 seater but it's virtually impossible to seat 4 people. And where I live, the WRX is cheaper, with AWD and more room,and much more power.

User avatar

Piorun  10y ago

I know that people are so purists lately, but sometimes You just want the most performance for the bucks.

First tunning in sports cars are usually tires, brakes, suspension and power.
If tires, brakes and suspension are ok You want more power. And i dont care about turbo lag, bad noice, just give that power to the car.

User avatar

Shaggy  10y ago

Either give it a turbocharger or a V6 engine.

User avatar

steph  10y ago

There seems to be a lot of talk of these cars being forced induction,but i disagree.To force induce these is to completely change the concept of it.

atleast Subaru are starting to make good looking car.

User avatar

ddd  12y ago

@Monkeypop average family sedan has 120-170 hp....Mayby 200 hp is not a big power but from the other side +- 250 hp is a big power :)

User avatar

@ Mental & Piorun: My brother once wanted a Honda S2000 when they were still being produced until he found out the price, over $30,000 in 2002.

User avatar

Mental  12y ago

Yeah, S2000 was a cool little sportscar. It was better than the modern BRZ in every aspect, maybe except the design. I would prefer the Honda, doubtless. But if I ever was looking for an affordable compact sportscar - Porsche Boxster is the best choice.. or BMW Z4 bla bla 35is.

BTW, Honda should have already made a successor to the S2000, as well unveil the production NSX already.

User avatar

Piorun  12y ago

@Super8
It doesnt have direct competitor?
I think Honda S2000, made 15 years ago is better car. Engine revs better, sounds good, is faster, and its convirtable. And You can have one for 30%-50% of Subaru price.

I personally would chose, some RWD BMW anyway, Ofourse it would not be a new car, but who care if it much quicker and better.

User avatar

Super8  12y ago

I heard the STI version will released in 2014. It's look like it doesn't have a direct competitor

User avatar

lafars  12y ago

take the BRZ and the SRT8 jeep to the stelvio pass, i highly doubt the jeep would be as enjoyable as this there :)

User avatar

Shaggy  12y ago

Look on the bright side, a Jeep can't get 25 MPG in the city, or 34 MPG on the highway. ;) But the BRZ could use more power, from an available flat 6, like the 256 horsepower 3.6 liter engine in the Legacy, and Subaru needs to offer the BRZ with the Impreza WRX STI, 200 horsepower isn't underpowered in a 2684 LB car, but there's room for improvement, and you're right monkeypop, car companies shouldn't limit a car's capabilities to keep it slower than their more expensive cars, that isn't as much sad as it is infuriating.

User avatar

monkeypop  12y ago

I hate when car makers underpower a car just to keep it from showing up their more expensive models.

No sports car should be slower around a legit track than a 4x4 jeep. That's just sad.

User avatar

Shaggy  12y ago

It is the car, 200 horsepower VS the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT/8's 470, my money would be on the Jeep. I would love to see a Subaru BRZ with the engine from the Impreza WRX STI, that would be awesome.

@ferarri driver

Shame on the car. Its not the drivers fault that the car does not have enough power to keep up with a srt jeep around vir. This car having the power level of a average 90's model family sedan is a shame. The power level is all that is holding this car back.

With 300 horses this car would give the wrx problems...which is probably a big reason they did not give it adequate power.

User avatar

Ferrari driver  12y ago

@Monkeypop
Not shame on the car.
Shame on the driver.

User avatar

monkeypop  12y ago

I mean the brz is slower around vir than a damn jeep. That's shameful for a car with so much potential.

User avatar

monkeypop  12y ago

I'm not knocking this car.. I just don't think it has enough power. For its pricepoint it is underpowered. A cobalt ss for example would blow this things doors off for less money.

Another 75 or so bhp and this little car has serious potential. I belive they could have easily made it more powerful without running up the weight or the price. I think they did not do so because they wouldn't want this showing up their more powerful and expensive cars. Its a shame because short wheelbase rwd with a manual is my absolute favorite type of car to drive.

User avatar

Mental  12y ago

I bet turbocharged up to 300 PS, BRZ would be a good performance machine and in addition would even more fun to drive, getting a wild animal. That would be a wise deal. And still that would be a very affordable car.

And I'd take BRZ over a MX-5 cause it performs better and looks better. Though I wouldn't refuse driving MX-5, and I wouldn't call it especially for women. Just women loves these things, and that's probably the best affordable sportcar choice for them.

User avatar

BR2'  12y ago

You can buy any car to have fun, but this ones a bit different.

Even highschoolers can afford this car(Given they have a decent job)

Its a purists car for people not wanting nasty lil electronic aids and a silly paddled operated gearbox(Even though an auto is available)

Its light, and looks REALLY good upclose(I just saw one in red last week, small too)

Its a Japanese car, so even before this car was in production there were already aftermarket parts for it.

Also, there may even be a Performance model of the cars respected brand, BRZ STI, FR-S TRD, GT-86 TT etc.

Theres always room for improvement, but that also raises price and could hurt the car in some way.

Ps: The Miata maybe a capable car in almost any way, wether its a destroyer round tracks or some kind of "Monster" but its still a Feminine car, every generation of MX5 has been.

User avatar

lafars  12y ago

@dave
this is not a numbers car, you buy this car to have fun

User avatar

Dave  12y ago

Even if it's a slow car, they should have at least given it a turbocharged engine so you can get a lot more power with cheap bolt on mods.

User avatar

monkeypop  12y ago

@anon

Monster and miata are two words that when combined don't make sense.

User avatar

Аnon  12y ago

Sure, miata is totally a feminine car. That's why it is a base for multiple Monster Miata project cars, that destroy anything on any small-and-technical circuits.

User avatar

BR2'  12y ago

Ill agree the Miata is Feminine, But i see more males drive them then females, Miatas always been a good car, i wouldnt buy one simply because i think there are better ones that fit me ut there, and because its a drop top. But ill pick a BRZ over any miata simply because it looks better and is a hard top.
