6 BMW M2 barely faster than a Porsche SUV

Cover for BMW M2 barely faster than a Porsche SUV

So which is faster - SUV or sports coupe? This may seem like a silly "Captain Obvious" question to you, but it didn't to Auto Express.

Based on near parity in straight line accelration data, Auto Express decided it might be worthwhile doing a "sports coupe vs SUV" track duel between BMW M2 and Porsche Macan Turbo.

Macan is smaller, lower and lighter than Cayenne, but it also has a smaller V6 turbo instead of a V8.

Less bulk was certainly helpful at the track, and the four wheel drive with variable torque split was also advantageous.

As a result, Macan Turbo lost by only half a second over a 46 second lap.

As always, laptimes are available at the Llandow track page.

Its a 40s track, You cant expect even the fastest cars to make big ground over lesser cars on such a small circuit.

I'm surprised the M2 is within half a second of a GTR and less than 1 behind a GT12.

This is a bit sensationalist. Like Aston.loses to Golf or f12 beaten by ol camaro. Porsche are much more honest than VW but still their vehicle uses much more new school tech than the Bimmer besides being incredibly powerful.

The comparison shouldn't be to the Tesla. Teslas are no track cars. Their batteries overheat very quickly. I recall on topgear, they lapped a P90D around the redbull ring, and it was 10 seconds slower than a C63S. If this track was 2x as long, the Tesla would start to drop way back.

And the Alpina XD3 was only 0.4 s slower on some track, than the Tesla S P85D. There are some surprising SUVs today.

"If in 2016 the difference between a sports car and sports utility vehicle is only half a second, give it another 10 years and we will have Porsche Cayennes and BMW X5 Ms on 2026 Formula 1 grid."
