Laguna Seca (post 1988)

Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is a paved road racing track used for both auto racing and motorcycle racing, originally constructed in 1957 near Monterey, California, USA. The current racetrack is 2.238 miles in length (3.602 kilometers), has eleven turns, including the famous "Corkscrew" at Turns 8 and 8A, and a 300 foot (91 m) elevation change. When it comes to this track Czinger is going to act like SSC and never back down since they are based in California.

Czinger 21c new lap time: 1:24.75, as a response for koegnigsegg.

It's been confirmed that Markus Lundh, the Jesko driver, set his Laguna Seca record first try.

From his Instagram:

  • "Leading up to the record we did passenger runs and during the lunch break we equipped the car with Cup2R's. On the second hotlap with these tires we broke the record."

It's unclear if it was one or two sets of tires since you only get one real hot lap attempt per set, but technically have two "hot laps" on each set even though one will be significantly slower than the other.

But in any case this also confirms without a doubt, based on Czinger's record and every other time attack attempt in the history of time attacks, that they left several seconds on the table. In my estimation more than what they gained from the resurfacing.

I'm trying to get verification on exactly how many sets of tires Jesko used but from the videos it looks like they only two sets, one on the alloy rims and one on the carbon rims, and DDE wrote that they "only a handful of test laps before the record breaking run". So it looks like they did the sighting/test laps on the alloys (at least partially with passengers) and then swapped for the carbon rims and set the record. Which would mean that Markus only had one real hot lap to get it right.

For context:

  • Every set is good for one hot lap. One in lap, one lap to get heat into the tires, the hot lap and the out lap. Czinger improved 3-4 seconds from the tire heating lap to the hot lap and the Cup Rs fade quickly and lose peak performance, so that's why there's ideally one hot lap per set when they do time attacks, even though they technically run them four laps.

  • On the record day Czinger ran four sets that we know of and improved by about a second per set (you can see this in their video, on a notebook with all the sets and lap times written down). In essence, they improved tre, four seconds just from the driver warming up, and this wasn't his or Czinger's first time on the track.

  • Czinger also tweaked the aero and ECU with CFD and simulations to optimize the downforce and the traction for the track. And per their video we know that they went at least one time before (probably significantly more since it's their home track) to verify the data. Koenigsegg could have simulated the aero for diminishing returns but couldn't have verified data or gotten traction curves. So this is worth at least a second at a low estimate.

So from what we know based on independent witness statements on Koenigsegg's end, and Czinger's data on Czinger's end, they left at least, with a conservative estimation, 3 seconds on the table. But potentially even five, six depending on how good Markus is at adapting to a new track and how much the lack of optimization came into play.

So the "resurfacing" argument is moot if we're doing a true apples to oranges comparison. It's a neat, easy little cope but it doesn't consider all the other factors associated with a time attack. Realistically Koenigsegg could gain more time from better preparation, more laps and a more experienced and/or simply warmed up driver, than Czinger could from the improved traction. Provided of course that Koenigsegg didn't get extremely lucky with their set up and Markus somehow managed to set a perfect lap first try, which virtually never happens since the norm for time attacks laps is weeks, months or even years of preparations of tweaking the car and going through tires and grinding away until they get a perfect lap.

I just got this info that Leguna Seca just had a resurfacing, a month ago.

Which means more grip, a dude recorded his fastest time in 750S, faster than a Senna LOL.

We need complete re-run of the cars to gauge who is the best. Sadly it will take years.

Just realised that the track has changed a lot. turns 5 and 6 both have runoff beyond the rumble strips, and cars can take those turns MUCH faster than before. Turn 6 was always a scary fast turn, and in the best cars, Randy Pobst could take it at 80mph. This guy does it at 89mph, on Pzero Corsa tires. practically it's a different track now and lap times won't correlate much to previous ones

The new track surface (2023) made Indycar nearly 5 seconds faster for pole position year on year. A circa 67 second lap now. Hugely grippy.

Might some brands now get their road cars on the track to set a good time while the asphalt is pristine? It may also be an interesting testing venue to deal with better grip on the same track.

Are current cars continually added to this list? When was the last update?

@Fastestlaps ❤️RED ALERT!

Can we please add below Tesla Plaid laptime?

https://www.hagerty.com/media/news/watch-teslas-1100-hp-model-s-plaid-trounce-the-corvette-c7-zr1s-laguna-seca-lap-time/

Quote>"Tesla posted an onboard video of the Model S Plaid’s Laguna Seca lap, and we’ll spoil it right now—this EV is wickedly fast. Tesla didn’t strip the interior or run a trick suspension setup, either; the car was wearing a set of Michelin Sport Cup 2 tires that will soon be available on the production model, and the ONLY MODIFICATION to the car was the installation of a racing bucket seat."

The car is stock production and the video plus GPS are below.

Could we please add also the Lucid Air laptime set by the factory. The Unplugged Tesla laptime has been added? Mark it pre production prototype or whatever!~ It's only fair and more importantly consistent. These cars have a stigma attached to them regards racetracks and laptimes! But they are bloody quick!

If you need anything else please state so we shouldn't be neglecting EV's or hybrids or anything else!

I only found out because of someone on Mclaren Life! It is what it is!🙂

Quote>"Watch a Tesla Model S Plaid prototype lap Laguna Seca in 1:30.3 seconds!

It's one thing to read that a car, in this case the 1,100-horsepower tri-motor Tesla Model S Plaid, is fast. It's quite another to see visual evidence in the form of an in-camera video of the tartan-Tesla lapping Laguna Seca in 1:30.3 seconds. Now, thanks to the magic that is the Internet, you can witness the next best thing to being the person belted into the driver's seat by watching the video up above.

Speaking of the driver, this is apparently well-known YouTuber Sebastian Vittel (not to be confused with F1 driver Sebastian Vettel) behind the wheel. Vittel, which we will assume is an alias, says the S Plaid was on a custom set of Michelin Sport Cup 2 tires that will be released along with the vehicle when it goes on sale in late 2021. The only modification to the vehicle, according to the video description, was a replacement bucket seat that was installed for safety reasons.

To put a 1:30.3 lap in perspective, it's just a few seconds shy of the McLaren Senna, which set a production car record of 1:27.62 when Motor Trend had it at the track. It's also faster than any published time recorded by a prototype Lucid Air, an electric sedan that ought to compete with Tesla's best once it actually goes on sale. Tesla CEO Elon Musk hinted that there are a few seconds to be gained at the track, suggesting that the Model S Plaid will eventually hold, not just the electric vehicle record, but the outright production-vehicle record at Laguna Seca.

We look forward to watching Lucid, Tesla and Porsche continue to battle for electric-sedan track superiority."" <Yes we absolutely do!🔥

Quote>"We recently set a new “personal best” while at Laguna Seca Raceway for #LucidAir chassis tuning and powertrain testing: An out-of-the-box lap time of 1: 31.3."

Keep watching. Exciting times. This car IS SPECIAL.

If you filter out non road legal that silly Unplugged Performance time still shows up, even though that thing had racing slicks, stripped interior, etc.

I know tesla fanboys like lying but come on now, don't kill the credibility of this site.

Quote>"The 1233bhp hyper-hybrid was sent around the 2.24-mile course, with professional racer Joel Millar at the wheel, in just 1min 25.44secs, far outpacing the previous record of 1min 27.62secs set by the McLaren Senna in 2019. Conditions were described as "ideal" and the car used road-legal Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2R tyres."

That's ****ing impressive! OO
